The Carlton Hotel Prestwick near Ayr was built in 1939. It was originally called the Prestwick Hydropathic Hotel. The hotel was built by the Prestwick Hydropathic Company, which was owned by the Boswell family. The Boswell family were prominent landowners in the area.
The hotel was designed by the architect James Miller. Miller was a Scottish architect who designed many notable buildings in Scotland, including the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.
